Hi, I’m Stephen, founder of Northern Archival.

My passion for photography doesn’t fit into a single lane. Whether capturing grand landscapes from above with a drone, photographing portraits, or documenting street scenes, I’ve always believed one fundamental truth: photographs are meant to be printed.

There is a tactile magic to holding a physical print in your hand. A depth, weight, and presence that a glass screen can never replicate.

From the Photo Lab to Museum Standards

My journey into the science of printing started in high school, working at a London Drugs photo lab. Operating the Noritsu printers fueled my love for print production, but it also exposed a massive flaw in high-volume retail photo labs: "good enough" was the benchmark.

I watched prints roll off the processors with crushed shadow detail, flat midtones, and poor black-and-white tonal reproduction. Handing customers prints that fell short of their potential wasn't just frustrating but down right embarrassing. I saw firsthand how volume labs prioritize speed over quality, hoping the customer simply won't notice the difference.

Northern Archival was built to be the exact opposite of that commercial assembly line.

Back in the film era, lab technicians routinely auto-corrected skin tones, exposure, and colour casts to fit a standardized mold. But modern photographers choose their color grades, contrast profiles, and visual styles deliberately.
